Dr. Omar Shakeel is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Hematology-Oncology at Baylor College of Medicine, and provides clinical care at Texas Children’s Hospital. During his training, Dr. Shakeel was frequently approached by families seeking to understand potential causes of their child’s cancer and ways to reduce future health risks. These conversations sparked his interest in the role of environmental exposures in the development and long-term outcomes of pediatric cancers. He recently proposed the establishment of the first Pediatric Cancer Environmental Referral Service to address these concerns. Dr. Shakeel currently leads the Long-Term Survivor Clinic at Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Center. He serves on the Scientific Advisory Council for the Childhood Cancer Prevention Consortium and is an advisory board member for an R21 clinical trial investigating links between childhood cancer and environmental events. His clinical and research interests focus on integrating environmental health and preventive strategies into pediatric oncology care.
