Dr. Andrei Herdean is a researcher with a robust
background in photosynthesis research, molecular biology, biophysics, and
genetics. His research primarily focuses on the efficient conversion of solar
energy into biological products through microalgae, aiming to facilitate
sustainable solutions for food, feed, and deep decarbonization of our society. At
the University of Technology Sydney, he has pioneered the development of
cutting-edge laboratory automation and directed evolution techniques to
cultivate the next generation of microalgae. These efforts have resulted in
three UTS patents and the creation of a patented microalgae species, tailored
to produce future-oriented bio-products such as foods, biofuels, bioplastics,
and dyes. His academic contributions are substantial, with a significant number
of peer-reviewed publications that reflect his ongoing commitment to advancing
the field of biotechnological applications of microalgae. As a dedicated
mentor, he has supervised a diverse group of students, including honours,
masters, and PhD candidates, guiding them through their research projects and
fostering their academic and professional growth. Dr. Herdean has been an Honours
Committee Member of the UTS Faculty of Science, Sydney, Australia since 2
January 2023.
