Prof. Zixin Deng received a BS degree from Huazhong Agricultural University in 1982 and a PhD from the University of East Anglia in 1987. After receiving his doctorate from the university, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the John Innes Centre for a year. He joined Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2000 and is currently the Chair Professor of the School of Life Sciences & Biotechnology. Prof. Deng is an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS). He is also the Chairman of the Chinese Society of Microbiology, the Vice Chairman of the Chinese Society of Agricultural Biotechnology, and the Chairman of the Expert Committee of the International Organization of Industrial Microbial Genetics (GIM-IC). He has been engaged in molecular biology research on microbial metabolism for a long time, focusing on actinomycete genetics and chemical biology of antibiotic biosynthesis.
