Dr. María J Calzada received her PhD in Biology, specializing in Biochemistry, Molecular
and Cellular Biology, from Universidad Autonoma of Madrid. During the period
2000-04, she carried out postdoctoral study at the NIH, NCI, Bethesda, MD. In January
2005, she was awarded a prestigious Ramón y Cajal contract and joined the
Department of Medicine at the School of Medicine, Universidad Autónoma de
Madrid, where she was promoted to Associate Professor in 2009. She is also
principal investigator at the Health Research Institute Hospital de la Princesa.
She has contributed more than 40 research publications (including 35 in Q1
journals and 27 in top-tier D1 journals) in the field of molecular and
cellular biology. She has consistently secured competitive funding for projects
focused on pathological processes, with a primary emphasis over the past decade
on understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying chronic respiratory
diseases, particularly the roles of hypoxia and tobacco smoke. She has led 11
competitive research projects—including an NIH RO1 (co-PI), a multicenter
biomedical network project in Madrid (as coordinator), seven national projects
(AEI, ISCIII), and two funded by private foundations—and collaborated on over
10 additional national and international projects. She is a member of the
CIBERES research group (since 2022) and serves as a scientific evaluator for
several national and regional research agencies.
