Prof. Dr. Andre Knoesen received a B.Eng. degree in electronic engineering from the University of Pretoria, Pretoria, South Africa, in 1980, and M.S.E.E. and Ph.D. degrees from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA, USA, in 1982 and 1987, respectively. He joined the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of California, Davis, Davis, CA, USA, in 1987. He is currently a Professor and the Department Chair. His general interest is to develop and apply sensors and sensor networks to enhance interactions between humans and electronic systems. His research now focuses on winemaking as a specific application area. New sensors and methods are developed that, along with the existing sensors, are connected into large-scale networks to monitor multiple physical and chemical parameters to better understand, control, in general, optimize wine fermentations. Dr. Knoesen is a fellow of the Optica (formerly Optical Society of America).
