Dean Kyne currently holds the professor and disaster studies program director positions at the Department of Sociology of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV). His scholarly work, published in numerous high-impact peer-reviewed journals, encompasses various topics including disaster and emergency management, environmental social science, sustainability, resilience, social capital, and preparedness for and evacuation during disaster and emergency events. His academic credentials are extensive. He earned a PhD in environmental social science from Arizona State University, a master's of public administration from Pennsylvania State University, and a master's of professional studies from Cornell University. Additionally, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Karlsruhe University in Germany and obtained a graduate certificate in geographic information systems (GISs) from Arizona State University. He has been recognized for his contributions to the field of emergency management. On 5 June 2019, he received the Dr. Tom Phelan Award at the 21st Annual Emergency Management Higher Education Symposium, hosted by the Federal Emergency Management Institute and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in Emmitsburg, MD. Further acknowledging his academic excellence, he was named a Fulbright Scholar by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs Exchange Program of the U.S. Department of State on 6 March 2020.
