Author Biographies

Ulrich Rist received his bachelor's and master's degrees in chemical and process engineering from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). His master's degree focused on energy technology, and his master's thesis at the Institute of Thermal Process Engineering was in the field of temperature evolution in lithium-ion batteries. Since February 2021, he has been a research scientist at the Institute of Applied Materials - Applied Materials Physics (IAM-AWP), which is part of KIT, with a research focus on laser-assisted printing (LIFT) processes for developing advanced 3D batteries. In 2024, he received the Best Conference Paper Award for his contribution entitled "Laser-Induced Forward Transfer - Current Approaches and the Prespectives for 4D Printing of Batteries" at the IEEE International Conference on Manipulation, Manufacturing and Measurement on the Nanoscale.
Wilhelm Pfleging is Head of the Laser Materials Processing Group at the Institute of Applied Materials, part of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed articles in scientific journals, books and conference proceedings. His research focuses on the development of laser-assisted processes, analysis and manufacturing of advanced lithium-ion batteries and related energy storage materials. Over the past decade, he has initiated numerous internationally and nationally funded projects in the field of laser materials processing and lithium-ion batteries, with a focus on battery performance and process upscaling. The projects include both fundamental and applied research with industrial and academic partners. Since his habilitation in 2019 and his professorship in 2022, his teaching field at the KIT university has been "Laser Technology".
