Dr. Björn Bauer is a Professor at the College of Pharmacy, University of Kentucky. Dr. Bauer received a B.S. in Pharmacy and a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences/Pharmacology from the University of Heidelberg, Germany, and then conducted work as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the NIH/NIEHS in Research Triangle Park, NC, USA. Dr. Bauer’s research focuses on the regulation of blood–brain barrier function in epilepsy and Alzheimer’s disease.
Anika M.S. Hartz is a Professor at the University of Kentucky, Sanders-Brown Center on Aging. She received a B.S. in Pharmacy in 2002 and a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences/Pharmacology in 2005 from the University of Heidelberg, Germany. After receiving her Ph.D., she continued as a postdoctoral researcher at NIH/NIEHS and later as a Research Associate at the University of Minnesota. In 2010, she was appointed Assistant Professor in the College of Pharmacy at the University of Minnesota. In 2014, she joined the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging at the University of Kentucky as an Associate Professor and was appointed Full Professor in 2023. Her NIH-funded research program focuses on developing novel therapeutic strategies to repair blood–brain barrier dysfunction, with the ultimate goal of improving memory loss and delaying the onset and slowing the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.
