Prof. María Carmen Asensio is a Permanent Research Staff
at the Institute of Material Science of Madrid and co-founder of the Research
Associated Unit: MATINÉE, between the ICMM and the Institute of Materials
Science (ICMUV) at the Valencia University, in Spain. She commenced her
academic career in Argentina. Then, she held a two-year Senior Lecturer in
Physics at the Autonomous University of Madrid, followed by a two-year
post-doctoral position at the University of Warwick in England, also staying at
the Fritz Haber Institute of the Max-Planck in Berlin, Germany. In 2004, she
was elected the Scientific Director of the IUVSTA ‘International Union for Vacuum
Science, Technique and Applications’ until 2007. Presently, she has been chair
of the IUVSTA Surface Science Division since 2016 to date. She has been
appointed and is acting as an Editorial Member of several reputed scientific
journals. Her work is focused on the in-depth characterization of advanced
materials and the development of state-of-the-art spectroscopic instrumentation.
Karen is a Senior Lecturer in Physics at the University of Central Lancashire. She is Chair of the Institute of Physics (IOP) Thin Films and Surfaces Group. Karen is interested in the surfaces and interfaces of materials for energy. Her recent research has focussed on ionic liquids, which show great promise for transforming industrial processes such as CO2 capture, catalysis and photovoltaics. She carries out most of her research at national facilities and synchrotrons using photoemission and X-ray absorption techniques.
