Author Biographies

Dr. Candis M. Morello is the Professor of Clinical Pharmacy and Associate Dean for Student Affairs at the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of California San Diego. She received her B.A. in Chemistry with a minor in Socio-cultural Anthropology from UC Davis in 1991 and her Pharm.D. from UC San Francisco in 1996. She completed her PGY1 residency with a geriatric emphasis at the Veterans Affairs San Diego Health System (VASDHS) in 1997 and obtained the National Board Certification as a Certified Diabetes Care Education Specialist (CDCES) from ADCES in 1999. Dr. Morello's research program involves exploring clinical outcomes in people with diabetes and associated disorders (e.g., cardiac, renal, neuropathy, dyslipidemia, liver, mental health) and educational or wellness outcomes of student pharmacists. Dr. Morello maintains a practice as a Clinical Pharmacist Provider at the VASDHS, where she is Director of the Diabetes Intense Medical Management Clinic. She studies the impact of pharmacist-run diabetes comprehensive medication management services on the metabolic, quality-of-life, patient satisfaction, medication adherence, pharmacoeconomics, medication complexity, mental health, medication use patterns/cost, and long-term clinical outcomes. Dr. Morello also conducts research on the effectiveness of educational models and wellness.

Dr. Jan D. Hirsch is Founding Dean of the University of California Irvine School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, where she is also Professor of Clinical Pharmacy. She is a Distinguished Scholar and Fellow of the National Academies of Practice (NAP) in Pharmacy, and a Distinguished Fellow of the Get the Medications Right (GTMRx) Institute, and joined UC Irvine in January 2019. Previously, she was a Professor of Clinical Pharmacy and Chair of the Division of Clinical Pharmacy at the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, at the University of California, San Diego. She was also Executive Director of Partners in Medication Therapy (PMT), an outreach program of the school providing medication therapy management services in the community. She received her B.S. in Pharmacy and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Pharmacy Administration from the University of South Carolina, College of Pharmacy. Before returning to academia, she spent 14 years in the pharmaceutical and managed care industries where she was responsible for establishing and managing outcomes research departments for two pharmaceutical companies (Glaxo Group Research in Greenford (U.K.) and Allergan (U.S.)) and a pharmacy benefit management company (Prescription Solutions (U.S.)). Her research interests are focused on the areas of pharmacoeconomics and outcomes research.
