Prof. Dr. Bret D. Ulery received a Bachelor of Science engineering degree in chemical engineering and a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry from the University of Iowa in 2006. In 2010, he earned his Ph.D. in chemical engineering with a graduate minor in immunobiology in the lab of Dr. Balaji Narasimhan at Iowa State University. Following completion of his doctoral studies, Dr. Ulery spent two years as a Postdoctoral Fellow in Dr. Cato Laurencin’s research group in the Institute for Regenerative Engineering at the University of Connecticut Health Center followed by 2 years as a Postdoctoral Scholar under the advisement of Dr. Matt Tirrell at the University of Chicago before joining the MU faculty in 2014. Dr. Ulery has authored some 55 peer-reviewed publications, manuscript submissions, book chapters, and technology disclosures in various journals including Advanced Healthcare Materials, Nature Scientific Reports, Pharmaceutical Research, PLoS One, and more. As Principal Investigator of the Biomodulatory Materials Engineering Laboratory (BioMEL), Dr. Ulery’s diverse team of 21 researchers has broad collaborative reach and capabilities, working with 25 faculty members across 15 departments in 5 colleges at MU. Their research focuses on the design, development, and production of novel biomaterials for a variety of biomedical applications, primarily in the fields of immunology and regenerative medicine, to address a wide range of unmet clinical needs.
