Ilias S. Frydas is a molecular virologist at the Laboratory
of Environmental Engineering (EnvE Lab). After a year of studying at the
Department of Physics, in November 2004 he continued his research at the
Department of Biology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, where he
obtained a Diploma in Molecular Biology, Genetics and Biotechnology in November
2009. Since 2009, he worked as an assistant researcher in the second Pediatrics
Department of the University Hospital of Thessaloniki (AhePa), studying various
inflammatory pathways based on microarray analysis. In January 2011 he joined
the Laboratory of Virology at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the
University of Ghent, in Belgium, where he started his PhD on PRRS virus. In
July 2015, he was awarded a PhD in Veterinary Virology. After completing his
military service he worked at Celixir pharmaceutical company. Currently, he is
a postdoctoral researcher on the HBM4EU and the BlueHealth European projects.
Ioannis A. Giantsis is an Assistant Professor at Aristotle
University of Thessaloniki. He was an Assistant Professor of Animal Genetics in
the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, University of Western Macedonia, Greece
from 2020 to 2023. He received his B.S., M.Sc., and Ph.D. from Aristotle
University of Thessaloniki in 2008, 2010 and 2015, respectively. He served as a
Postdoctoral researcher at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (2016–2017), as
a Postdoctoral researcher at USDA-ARS, Greece (2015–2019), and as a
Postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Ichthyology and Aquatic
Environment, University of Thessaly (2018–2019). He was also a Scientific
collaborator in TEI of Western Macedonia from 2015 to 2020. His research
interests include, but are not restricted to, population genetics and dynamics,
the development and application of molecular techniques for pathogen detection,
molecular physiology, and the effect of climate change on animal populations
with a particular focus on marine bivalves.
