Stephen Okumu Ombere is a Kenyan-based medical anthropologist in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Maseno University Kenya. He has recently spearheaded the curriculum development for the Master of Arts in Medical Anthropology at Maseno University. He researches maternal health and sexual reproductive health among youths and vulnerable and marginalized groups. Stephen has conducted extensive ethnographic fieldwork on maternal health among the Giriama community in Kilifi County, coastal Kenya. Currently, Stephen is conducting fieldwork on Mageta Island for his project titled The Ethnography of Women's Experiences of Maternal Healthcare Services in Mageta Island in Western Kenya. Based on his fieldwork, he has published an article on Birthing Choices Made by Pregnant Women on Mageta Island, Western Kenya. He is still exploring the relevance of traditional birth attendants in maternal healthcare in Mageta Island, Western Kenya. Stephen has published extensively on maternal health, child vulnerability to sexual abuse, migrating populations’ sexual behaviour, digital technology and healthcare in hard-to-reach areas, and technology and education during pandemics. Stephen is a peer reviewer of many international peer-reviewed journals such as Social Science & Medicine, Medical Anthropology, International Journal of Childbirth, and PLOS Global Public Health, among many other high-impact journals.
