Author Biographies

Dr. Nuno Monteiro Azevedo is an Assistant Researcher in the Department of Concrete Dams, National Civil Engineering Laboratory. He completed his BEng studies in Civil Engineering at the Technical University of Lisbon in 1997, and his PhD studies in the Built Environment at the Heriot-Watt University School of the Built Environment in 2003. He has published 140 papers, including journal articles, conference papers, and other technical and scientific reports. His research interests include continuum and discontinuum models to represent damage at the macro and aggregate scale for geomechanics materials, novel techniques for applying explicit particle models to fracture problems in quasi-brittle material (concrete, rock, old masonry, and asphalt pavement), finite/discrete element numerical models used for the static and dynamic analysis of concrete and masonry dams, and discontinuum hydromechanical-coupled models for the safety assessment of concrete and masonry dams coupled to dams/foundations safety.
Ildi Cismaşiu, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Civil Engineering Department at NOVA School of Science and Technology, NOVA University of Lisbon and a collaborator of CERIS NOVA Hub - Civil Engineering Research & Innovation for Sustainability. She completed her PhD in Civil Engineering in 2002 at Instituto Superior Técnico, Technical University of Lisbon. Her research interests include the development of non-conventional finite elements, parallel processing, vibration analysis and monitoring, and  numerical modelling and analysis. She has participated in five national-level research projects and has authored or co-authored more than 25 scientific publications, including book chapters and papers in international journals and conferences.
Prof. Dr. Fernando F. S. Pinho is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, NOVA University of Lisbon, and a Researcher at the Institute for Research and Innovation in Civil Engineering for Sustainability (CERIS NOVA). He completed his BEng studies in Civil Engineering at the Instituto Superior Técnico in 1988, MS studies in Construction at the Instituto Superior Técnico in 1996, and PhD studies in Civil Engineering at the NOVA University of Lisbon in 2007. Among other functions, he is the coordinator of the Southern Regional College of Civil Engineering of the Portuguese Association of Engineers (2019-2025) and the President of the Board of GECoRPA - Grémio do Patrimonio (association of companies and professionals specialized in heritage rehabilitation), since Mar/2024. His research interests include ancient buildings, experimental analysis and structural rehabilitation of rubblestone masonry walls.
