He earned his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1970 and has been a faculty member at UCSB for over five decades. His numerous honors and awards span across several prestigious organizations. From the American Nuclear Society (ANS), he received the Distinguished Achievement Awards in 1994 and 2010, the Special Achievement Award in 2010, the Best Paper Awards in 2004 and 2016, and was named an ANS Fellow in 1998. From TMS, he was honored with the Structural Materials Distinguished Scientist of the Year Award in 2014, the JOM Best Structural Materials Paper Award in 2015, and was elected a TMS Fellow in 2016. He was also recognized as an ASM Fellow in 2018 and as an AAAS Fellow in 2019. In addition to these accolades, symposia were held in his honor at the TMS Annual Meeting in 2009 and at the International Conference on Fusion Reactor Materials in 2019, reflecting his significant contributions to the field. His research focuses on developing rigorous models to predict material performance in extreme environments, such as intense neutron radiation fields in fission and future fusion reactors, as well as designing new high-performance, long-lasting structural alloys and composites.
