Author Biographies

Mark Colgate is a professor at the Gustavson School of Business, University of Victoria, specializing in leadership development, coaching, and service excellence. As Academic Director for Customized MBA Programs, he oversees curriculum design and executive education, ensuring programs are both innovative and research-driven. With experience teaching in Ireland, New Zealand, China, and Canada, Mark brings a global perspective to leadership and coaching. His current research integrates qualitative and quantitative methodologies, focusing on coaching effectiveness and the application of polyvagal theory in leadership. Beyond academia, he has worked with organizations such as the Canadian Government, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, TELUS Digital, and the Vancouver Whitecaps, helping to develop coaching cultures and high-performance teams. Mark’s work bridges theory and practice, equipping leaders with the tools to drive long-term success.
Orla Colgate teaches Introduction to Research Skills and Research Methods for School Counsellors at City University in Canada, where she also supervises Capstone students in both the Master of School Counselling and Master of Counselling programmes. With a background in elementary education, Orla has taught and studied in Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, and Canada. Drawing on both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, she is passionate about equipping educators with the skills to critically interpret and apply research in their practice. Orla’s research interests center on supporting parents in helping their children learn to read and exploring the role of the nervous system in students' sense of safety and response to stress, with a particular focus on Polyvagal Theory. In addition to her research and teaching, she has designed and delivered programmes for families seeking to enhance their children's literacy development. Her current research examines the intersection of Polyvagal Theory, coaching, and education, with the goal of fostering more effective strategies for student learning and well-being. She is also committed to strengthening collaboration between school leaders, teachers, and families to promote student well-being and holistic development.
