Prof. Susan Shaheen is a Professor of Civil and
Environmental Engineering at UC Berkeley. She also co-directs the
Transportation Sustainability Research Center (TSRC) of the Institute of
Transportation Studies. She also directs the UC Institute of Transportation Studies' Resilient and Innovative Mobility Initiative. She is a member of the Transportation Research Board’s
Executive Committee and was Chair and Vice Chair from 2019 to 2022. She was
appointed as the Automotive Member of the California Air Resources Board by
Governor Gavin Newsom in January 2023 and confirmed by the Senate in September
2023. She received an M.S. from the University of Rochester in 1990 and a Ph.D.
from the University of California in 1999. She was a Post Doctoral Scholar at the Institute of Transportation Studies at the University of California,
Berkeley from 2000 to 2001. Her research focuses on the adoption of emerging
transportation technologies and innovative services, such as carsharing
(short-term vehicle access), bikesharing (short-term bicycle access),
ridesharing (carpooling/vanpooling), transportation network companies (or
ridehailing), and smart parking management (public transit and trucks), as well as user acceptance of
alternative fuel vehicles and infrastructure and automation. Her work highlights social equity, particularly in the context of transportation infrastructure and mobility services.
