Author Biographies

Sandro Colla is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Clinical Sciences at Colorado State University, where he also completed a Large Animal Imaging internship and an Equine Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation residency. He obtained his DVM at Paulista State University in 2005. Following this, he completed an equine rotating internship at the University of Sao Paulo in 2006, his Master’s degree at the same university in 2014, and an equine internship at Brazos Valley Equine Hospital in Navasota, TX, in 2018. Since becoming a DVM, he has worked extensively in the field, including three years for the Brazilian Olympic Team and seven years as a professor of equine services at Paulista University. His research is focused on equine sports medicine and rehabilitation.

Kirk C McGilvray is an Associate Professor and the Associate Director of the Orthopaedic Bioengineering Research Laboratory, Colorado State University, and a core faculty member at the Translations Medicine Institute. He became a faculty member of the Department of Mechanical Engineering in August 2018. Prior to this, he served as a Research Faculty at CSU. He earned his B.S. (Biomedical Engineering (major), Mathematics (minor)), M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical Engineering, all from Colorado State University, in 2004, 2005, and 2009, respectively. He comprehensively exams the critically important relationships between biomechanics and biology following disease, trauma, and surgical intervention utilizing clinically translatable models. His research is aimed at moving regenerative medicine and orthopaedic technologies from the benchtop to the bedside.
Gustavo M Zanotto is a Clinical Assistant Professor of equine sports medicine and lameness at the Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center (EMC), College of Veterinary Medicine, Virginia Tech. He is also a member of the American Association of Equine Practitioners. In 2008, he completed his veterinary degree at the Federal University of Paraná in Brazil, followed by an internship at the University of Sao Paulo (USP), also in 2009. He stayed on at USP to complete a research fellowship before completing his Master’s degree in veterinary surgery in 2012. He joined Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado, in 2013, completing an internship in equine musculoskeletal radiology in 2015, before staying on for an equine sports medicine and rehabilitation residency, which he completed in 2019. During this residency, he earned a Ph.D. in Clinical Science. His main research interests include musculoskeletal pathology, joints, tendons, and diseases affecting sport horses.
