Dr.Eung Kweon Kim has been an ophthalmologist mainly treating corneal dystrophy patients in Korea since 2002. He was in professorship in ophthalmology between 2002 and 2021, and now is a professor, emeritus, at Yonsei University College of Medicine, Korea. He is the first ophthalmologist who reported that granular corneal dystrophy type 2 was exacerbated after LASIK in 2002, after LASEK in 2008, and after SMILE in 2021. When he served as the President of Korean Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, 2003–2005, he noticed in the academic area that granular corneal dystrophy type 2 is the contraindication for refractive surgery touching the central cornea. He is in charge of more than 35 papers for TGFBI-related corneal dystrophies among his more than 200 papers published in international journals. He established the Corneal Dystrophy Research Institute at Yonsei University College of Medicine in 2006 and has served as the director for 15 years, conducting clinical and cell-biology-related research until he retired from the university because of the age limit law in Korea. He continues taking care of corneal dystrophy patients and clinical research as a visiting researcher in the Corneal Dystrophy Research Institute in Yonsei University and as an attending ophthalmologist at Saevit Eye Hospital, 2021–present.
