Author Biographies

Ziyad completed his BEng in Mechanical Engineering from Glasgow University. He then advanced his education by completing his MSc in Engineering and Management of Manufacturing Systems at Cranfield University, with a thesis focused on graphene nanotechnology. Ziyad is now pursuing a PhD in Manufacturing Sustainability at Cranfield, in which he was awarded a full-time studentship, seeking to expand his knowledge and contribute to the field. Ziyad is carrying out his PhD research within the Sustainable Manufacturing Systems Centre at Cranfield University. His PhD research focuses on the sustainability of manufacturing processes and reducing their resource intensities. He is also part of the TransFIRe Hub (Transforming Foundation Industries Research and Innovation Hub) project focusing on mapping resource use in U.K. foundation industries and transferring best practices in these industries.

Prof. Mark R Jolly is a professor and director of the Manufacturing Sustainable Manufacturing Systems Centre at the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Cranfield University. He holds a Bachelor of Metallurgy (BMet) from Sheffield University and a PhD in Metallurgy from Cambridge University. Prior to joining Cranfield in 2012, he was a senior lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Birmingham. He set up the Castings Centre with a focus on technology and knowledge transfer of research into the foundry sector both nationally and internationally. In 1999, he created the Process Modelling Group after successfully completing his first EPSRC application on the Fundamentals of Investment Casting (FOCAST). Before moving into academia, he held various roles in industry, including positions at Foseco, the AE Group, and the Battelle Research Centre in Geneva, and he continues to have strong links with the metal manufacturing sector. Prof. Jolly’s current research interests include aerospace manufacturing, advanced casting science and technologies, computing, simulation and modelling, aerospace materials, and sustainable manufacturing. He has received several awards, including the ICME John Campbell Gold Medal in 2019, the Long & Notable Service Award (ICME) in 2013, the Josiah Mason Award for Business Advancement (University of Birmingham) in 2010, and the Oliver Stubbs Medal (ICME) in 2008.
Professor Konstantinos (Kostas) Salonitis (Dip Eng, MSc, PhD, MBA, MEd, PGCAP, CEng FIMechE, FHEA) is a professor of Manufacturing Systems. Kostas has published over 250 research papers in major international journals and internationally referred conferences and authored two books. He has supervised more than 20 PhD students to completion.
