Pedro Estrela is a Professor of Biosensors and Bioelectronics in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, University of Bath. He is the Director of the Centre for Bioengineering and Biomedical Technologies (CBio), University of Bath. From 2000–2008, he was a Research Associate/Senior Research Associate in the Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge. He holds a Ph.D. in Physics from the Universiteit van Amsterdam, the Netherlands. His research focuses on developing label-free electrochemical biosensors and chemical sensors for a wide range of applications, such as medical diagnostics and environmental monitoring. A particular interest of his concerns the development of biologically sensitive field-effect transistors and electrochemical impedance-based sensors for the detection of oligonucleotides, proteins, cells, bacteria, small molecules, and ions. Such sensors can then be coupled with microfluidics and electronics to generate low-cost portable biodevices for point-of-care/point-of-sampling applications.
