Prof. Claude Mambo Muvunyi is the Director General of Rwanda Biomedical
Center (RBC). He has over 15 years of scientific, technical, and
leadership expertise in strategic planning, management, innovation, and
implementation in public health and healthcare at international,
regional, national levels. He has substantial expertise in clinical
and public laboratory medicine with a special focus on clinical
microbiology, enhancing laboratory systems and services, health system
strengthening, and global health security improvement. Prof. Muvunyi is
currently a full professor of Clinical Microbiology and Laboratory
Medicine at the University of Rwanda. He holds a degree in general
medicine from the University of Rwanda, a specialization and a PhD in
Clinical Microbiology from the University of Ghent, Belgium, and a Master’s in
Medical Virology from the University of Manchester. Previously, he has been a
Senior Regional Laboratory Advisor at ICAP at Columbia University and a
Senior Consultant for the World Health Organization (WHO) on Antimicrobial
Resistance (AMR) surveillance and diagnostic capacity building
throughout Africa. His research interests include health
system analysis and strengthening, integrated surveillance systems for diseases and risk factors,
the prevention and control of diseases, risk factors, reducing
the socioeconomic burden of diseases, and developing and implementing
innovative approaches for the prevention and control of diseases.
