Pierre Bongrand is an emeritus professor of immunology at Marseille medical school, Aix-Marseille University (AMU), France. He was trained in mathematics and physics (Ecole Normale Supérieure, Paris) and medicine (Paris and Marseille). He spent his career in Marseille university, and he directed an immunology department in Marseille public hospital organization (APHM). He founded and directed a research multidisciplinary laboratory at the interface between medicine, immunology, and biophysics: LAI (cell adhesion and inflammation lab) is supported by AMU, the INSERM (national institute for health and medical research), and the physics department of CNRS (national scientific research institute). Pierre Bongrand's main research interests in chronological order were mononuclear phagocyte recognition mechanisms, cell adhesion, characterization of intermolecular bonds at the single-molecule level with a laminar flow chamber, early steps of T-lymphocyte activation and, throughout his career, computer-assisted image analysis. He was a member of the French Society of Imunology, The American Association of Immunologists, American Physical Society, Biophysical Society, and Society for Leukocyte Biology. He served on the editorial board of the Journal of Immunological Methods, Cell Biophysics, Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering, Scientific Reports, and Frontiers in Immunology.
