Evangelos Alevizos is a Marine Geoscientist specialised in image analysis for quantitative seafloor mapping. He has received his PhD from the CAU University of Kiel (Germany,) and currently he is a postdoc at the Remote Sensing, Benthic Ecology and Ecotoxicology group (Laboratoire ISOMer, Nantes University, France). Previously, he has been affiliated with the Deep Sea Monitoring group at GEOMAR Geomar Helmholtz Center of Ocean Research, Kiel (Germany); the Ocean BioGeosciences group at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton (UK); and the Laboratory of Geophysical - Satellite Remote Sensing & Archaeo-environment, at the Institute of Mediterranean Studies (IMS-FORTH, Greece). During his career, he has been involved in a broad range of marine mapping projects, incorporating hydro-acoustic and optical imagery datasets. His work includes supervised and un-supervised classification methods for characterising bathymetry and seafloor surface geology from the deep sea to nearshore areas. He has broad experience in processing and analysing multibeam backscatter data for inferring seafloor sediment types. His latest work focuses on applying semi-analytical and machine learning methodologies for mapping shallow bathymetry and macroalgae biomass using multi-spectral drone and satellite imagery. His main research interests include temporal mapping of seafloor sediment and habitat variability with autonomous platforms.
