Edward S. Madara is currently a research intern at Starkey Hearing, Eden Prairie, MN, USA and at IRIS Audio Technologies, London, United Kingdom. He is also a student at St. Paul's School, Concord, NH, USA. His recent research projects have included the development of deep neural network (DNN)-based solutions for voice isolation or noise reduction in hearing aids, and a narrative review assessing the psychological factors inhibiting hearing aid adoption. He is passionate about material science, biochemistry, electrical engineering, and psychology, and one day hopes to develop a broad solution to hearing loss. He is an inductee into the Cum Laude Society and a Ferguson Scholar Finalist at St. Paul's, the most distinguished academic award at the school.
Dr. Achintya K. Bhowmik is the chief technology officer at Starkey Hearing and an adjunct professor at Stanford University School of Medicine, where he is affiliated with the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence and the Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute. He has led the transformation of hearing aids into multifunctional communication and health devices with artificial intelligence. Previously, as the vice president and general manager of perceptual computing at Intel, he led pioneering efforts in computer vision, and immersive technologies, contributing to the development of autonomous systems and virtual reality. He is a member of the Forbes Technology Council, board of trustees for the National Captioning Institute, board of directors for Mojo Vision and OpenCV, board of advisors for the Fung Institute for Engineering Leadership at the University of California, Berkeley, and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. His work on intelligent devices has earned numerous accolades, including TIME’s Best Inventions, Artificial Intelligence Excellence award by the Business Intelligence Group, and Gold Globee award for “the Most Innovative Person of the Year in Healthcare”. He is a Fellow of SID, AAIA, and IEEE. He is an editorial board member for Sensory Neuroscience, Frontiers in Audiology and Otology, and the Journal of the Society for Information Display. He has authored 200 publications, including two books, and 80+ patents.
