Dr. Zakhar O. Shenkarev is the head of the Laboratory of
Structural Biology of Ion Channels at the M.M.Shemyakin & Yu.A.Ovchinnikov
Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry, Russian Academy of Sciences. He received his
master’s degree in Applied Mathematics and Physics at the Moscow Institute of
Physics and Technology (State University) and then completed his Ph.D. in
Biophysics and a second doctorate (habilitation) degree in Biophysics at the
M.M.Shemyakin & Yu.A.Ovchinnikov Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry, Moscow,
Russia. He has been awarded the Medal named after academician Yu.A. Ovchinnikov
from the Russian Society of Biotechnology in 2009 and the Medal for the best
scientific work performed by the group of young investigators in the field of
physical-chemical biology from the Russian Academy of Science in 2010. He is a
member of the FEBS and the International Society on Toxinology (IST). His main
research interests are structural biology; NMR
spectroscopy; cryo-electron microscopy; the biophysics of membrane proteins and
membrane-active peptides; trans-membrane proteins and ionic channels;
ligand-receptor interactions; channel-forming antimicrobial peptides; and
lipid-protein nanodiscs.
