Jiří Masojídek studied Biochemistry at Charles University in Prague. He obtained his PhD degree in the field of Microbiology at the Institute of Microbiology and professorship in the field of Molecular and Cellular Biology and Genetics at the Faculty of Science, University of South Bohemia. At present, he is a senior researcher at the Laboratory of Algal Biotechnology and a leader of phototrophic cultivation team. He has 40 years of experience in biochemistry, biophysics, microbiology, biotechnology, plant physiology, the cultivation of microalgae and the application of biochemical and biophysical methods to the study of structural and functional changes to the photosynthetic apparatus caused by various unfavorable conditions. For the past 20 years, he has been involved in microalgal biotechnology, studying microalgae mass cultures with a special focus on chlorophyll fluorescence techniques in order to characterize microalgae strains, to optimize cultivation regimes and to correlate photosynthetic performance and growth. He has also been involved in the design and consulting of various laboratory and outdoor cultivation systems and lectures at the Faculty of Science, University of South Bohemia, in České Budějovice.
