Author Biographies

Dr. Ricardo Cartes-Velásquez holds positions as a senior researcher at Fundación Kimntrum, a Lecturer on Biomedical Research Methods at the Universidad de Concepción School of Medicine, and serves as a Hospitalist physician at Hospital Las Higueras. With a diverse educational background, he earned a DDS from the Universidad de Concepción in 2006, followed by a PhD in Medical Sciences from the Universidad de La Frontera in 2014. Dr. Cartes-Velásquez furthered his studies with a PsyD from Universidad del Desarrollo in 2016, a Master of Public Health from The Metropolitan Manchester University in 2014, and an MD from Universidad de Concepción in 2019. Additionally, he holds a Master of Philosophy (2020) and a Master's in Biochemistry (2023) from the Universidad de Concepción. From 2012 to 2018, Dr. Cartes-Velásquez served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Oral Research, which is indexed in Scopus.

Estefanía Nova-Lamperti obtained her bachelor’s degree in biochemistry in 2007 and her professional degree in biochemistry from the University of Concepción in 2009. In 2009, she began her PhD in Immunology in the laboratory of Prof. Graham Lord at King’s College London, funded by Becas-Chile-CONICYT, obtaining her degree PhD in 2014. She then worked as a Research Assistant in the Flow Cytometry laboratory at Guy’s Hospital, and then in the Immunoregulation laboratory of the Medical Research Council (MRC) Center for Transplantation. In 2014, she obtained an international post-doctoral fellowship funded by Becas-Chile-CONICYT to study the role of E3-ubiquitin Ligase RNF144A in CD4 + T lymphocytes. In 2016 she began to study the characterization of T helper-like regulatory T lymphocytes and the regulation of the CD4 + lymphocyte response mediated by Vitamin D together. In 2017, she was hired by the Department of Clinical Biochemistry and Immunology of the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Concepción as an Assistant Professor and is currently researching the role of the immune system in cancer and autoimmune diseases.
