Ian Church is an Associate Professor and Assistant Dean
(Academic) of Engineering at the University of New Brunswick. He received his Bachelor
of Science, Master of Science, and Ph.D. degrees, all in Geodesy &
Geomatics Engineering from the University of New Brunswick, Canada in 2006,
2009, and 2014, respectively. He served as an Assistant Professor of Marine
Science at the Department of Marine Science, University of Southern
Mississippi, Stennis Space Centre (2014–2016). In 2016, he moved back to UNB to
take an appointment as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geodesy and
Geomatics Engineering and a leadership role in the Ocean Mapping Group. He specializes
in ocean mapping using acoustics. His current primary research interests are in
automated data processing, integrating numerical hydrodynamic modelling with
ocean mapping, acoustic water column interpretation,
and evaluating autonomous mapping platforms. The principal goals of his
research are to understand the marine environment using acoustics and to
recognize and minimize uncertainty in ocean mapping products.
