Graduated in Pharmacy-Biochemistry from the State University of Maringá (1980), holds a Master’s (1982) and a Doctorate (1984) from the Institute of Biomedical Sciences of the University of São Paulo, where he worked as a Full Professor until 2016. Best known for his pioneering work on leukocyte metabolism and the control of immune function and inflammatory response (immunometabolism). Visiting Researcher at the Department of Biochemistry and the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology at the University of Oxford, England; the School of Medicine at the Free University of Brussels, Belgium; the School of Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences and the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, USA. Member of the São Paulo State Academy of Sciences and the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, he was awarded by the Simon Guggenheim Foundation and Scopus/CAPES for his scientific achievements, recognized as a Distinguished Fellow at Curtin University in Perth, Australia, and received an Honorary Doctorate from the State University of Maringá.
