Mário José Gonçalves Cavaco Mendes is an Associate Professor at the Mechanical Engineering Department, Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Lisboa (ISEL), Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon, Portugal. He is a member of CENTEC-Centre for Marine Technology and Ocean Engineering and a member of CIMOSM/ISEL. He received his PhD (2008) from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Technical University of Lisbon, Portugal, and his MSc degree in Mechanical Engineering (2001), in the area of Control Systems, and an Engineering degree (5 years course, after BSc) in Mechanical Engineering (1998), in the area of Robotics and Automation, both degrees from the same Institute, IST. He has published research on his research interests: Control Systems for renewable energies and energetic efficiency; industry 4.0: digital factories; multi-agent system approaches in Fault Tolerant Control systems; and safety: Fault Detection and Isolation Systems and Soft Robotics. He won 2nd place in the H-INNOVA Award 2022 (3rd edition), https://www.hinnovahub.com/, with the project TOUCH REHAB-Soft Robotic Glove for Hand Rehabilitation. This award was the result of teamwork with two ISEL Master's students in Biomedical Engineering and two Professors. He also won, in 2015, the teacher award of the New Generation|15 by Siemens® with a proposal for industry 4.0. The New Generation award was an innovative ideas contest, designed for technical and higher education, to recognize young talents of national engineering.
