Prof. Dr. Rafael Mikolajczyk studied medicine at the Free University and the Humboldt University in Berlin and completed his third State Examination in 1999. He proceeded to finish his medical doctorate and spent three years in clinical work in the Department of Gynaecology and Birthing at the St. Joseph Hospital in Berlin and later at the University Women’s Clinic in Magdeburg. He moved to the Faculty for Health Sciences at the University of Bielefeld and acquired a post-graduate degree in Master's of Science in Epidemiology in 2002. He subsequently worked as a Scientific Assistant at the University of Bielefeld. He spent a year in a post-doc program at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, USA. In 2010, he attained a habilitation from the University of Bielefeld. He subsequently worked at the BIPS Institute for Epidemiology and Preventive Research in Bremen as Head of the Epidemiology in Patient Collective group in the Department of Clinical Epidemiology. In 2012, he assumed the position of head of the working group Epidemiological and Statistical Methods, in the Department of Epidemiology at HZI, Braunschweig. In 2016, he assumed the positions of a Full Professor for Epidemiology and Biometrics and the Director of the Institute of Medical Epidemiology, Biometrics and Informatics.
