Kimberly Garza is an Assistant Professor of Public Health Studies at Roanoke College. While completing her M bnaster of Public Health and MA and PhD in Anthropology at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Kimberly began focusing on pediatric diabetes research. After graduating, she was awarded an American Diabetes Association Fellowship to conduct a pilot program examining how education and psychosocial support influences CGM uptake and use. As a professor, her research agenda encompasses pediatric diabetes research with a focus on underserved populations, the role of adventure play in addressing social determinants of health within communities, and examining how engagement in civil and community issues can improve the health and well-being of opportunity youth populations. Kimberly is a member of the American Diabetes Association, the American Public Health Association, and the Human Biology Association. Kimberly was recently awarded the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges Mednick Fellowship, which will fund her work this fall to pilot research methods in adventure play at a playground in the UK.
