Michael J. Sweeney received his BS from Florida State University in 1975, his MD from the University of Florida in 1978, and his MBA from the University of South Florida in 1994. Dr. Sweeney is an associate professor of clinical sciences, teaching clinical skills, diagnostics, pathophysiology, and anatomy. He is the block co-director for the Gastrointestinal System Integrated Course. He also serves on the graduate teaching faculty with the FSU College of Business and is a clinical associate professor for the FSU Residency Program in General Surgery. Dr. Sweeney’s academic and professional appointments include adjunct professor of anatomy and physiology at Florida Community College in Jacksonville, as well as adjunct instructor in business management at Jacksonville University. He founded and served as CEO of Surgical Implant Services, which created a new model for implant purchases to reduce hospital costs and align physician incentives in the selection and purchase of devices including prosthetic joints, pacemakers and defibrillators, and spinal fusion hardware. Dr. Sweeney also served as system advisor for surgical services with Lee Memorial Health System; president and vascular and general surgeon for Surgical Specialists of Southwest Florida; president of Lee Independent Physicians Association; CEO of Physicians Health System; and clinical medical director for WellMed of Fort Myers.
