Prof. Dr. Michael S. McGrath is a Professor at the Department of Medicine, University of California San Francisco, San Francisco, USA. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a BS in Biology in 1974. Then, he went to the Stanford University School of Medicine and obtained his MD in Medicine and PhD in Cancer Biology in 1980 and 1985, respectively. Subsequently, he moved to Stanford University to serve a Medical residency and Hematology fellowship in 1985. He has been involved in studying the role of macrophages in the pathogenesis of a wide variety of diseases, including neurodegenerative diseases and cancer. The primary model systems for these studies revolved around the study of HIV-infected macrophages and their influence on the brain, as well as in lymphoma. Through the study of HIV, he has gained important insight into the pathogenesis of other non-HIV diseases that seem to operate in the same manner as those associated with HIV infection.
