Dr. Manuel A. Duarte-Mermoud is currently a Full Professor and the Director of Research at the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture at Universidad Central de Chile Santiago, Chile. He received a Civil Electrical Engineering degree from the University of Chile in 1977 and M.Sc., M. Phil., and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Yale University in 1985, 1986, and 1988, respectively. His main research interests are robust adaptive control (linear/nonlinear and integer/fractional systems), system identification, signal processing, and pattern recognition. He is focused on applications of energy, the mining and wine industries, sensory systems, and electrical machines and drives.
Dr. Juan Carlos Travieso-Torres currently works as a full professor (tenure track) at the Department of Industrial Technologies, Technological Faculty, University of Santiago of Chile. He has over 27 years of experience in the industry and 24 years of academic experience. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) with honors, Master of Science (MSc), and Electrical Engineer (EE) degrees. He has the credentials of a Project Manager Professional (PMP No 1303126) granted by the Project Management Institute in 2009. Regarding his professional experience, he has worked as deputy Project Engineering Manager in a Mega Project in Bechtel (USD 6 billion CAPEX), as the Site Manager and Engineering Manager at BHP Billiton (USD 300 million CAPEX), as Tie-in, Commissioning, and Field Engineering Manager at SNC-Lavalin, as a Global Subject Matter Expert at Fluor in the areas of DCS/PLC, control strategies, and variable speed drives as an Engineering Functional Manager and Project Manager at BRASS Chile S.A. His research interest lies in Adaptive Systems—theory and applications, including electrical machine drives.
