Dr. Nilam J. Soni is a Professor of Medicine and an Academic
Hospitalist at the University of Texas School of Medicine in San Antonio and the South Texas Veterans Health Care System. He is trained in internal medicine and
is an international expert in point-of-care ultrasound. Dr. Soni has
collaborated with a broad range of healthcare professionals to advance point-of-care ultrasound implementation in multiple specialties, and he is an accomplished educator of point-of-care ultrasound nationally and internationally. He currently
leads development of a national point-of-care ultrasound program for the
Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and serves as the Director of the VA Point-of-Care
Ultrasound Patient Safety Center. His current scholarly work includes evaluating
the impact of incorporating point-of-care ultrasound use into clinical care, and
in 2016, he was awarded a VA Quality Enhancement Research Initiative (QUERI) grant
to evaluate the implementation of point-of-care ultrasound training in the VA healthcare
system. He is the visionary and chief editor of the book, Point-of-Care Ultrasound,
which was awarded the 2015 British Medical Association’s President’s Choice Award and has been translated into seven different languages.
He has led the establishment of a point-of-care ultrasound certificate training program
offered by the Society of Hospital Medicine and Chest, and he continues to be actively involved in point-of-care ultrasound through national medical societies.
Dr. Marcos I. Restrepo, MD, MSc, PhD is a Professor of
Medicine and Associate Program Director of the Division of Pulmonary and
Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program at the
University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He specializes in
Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. He completed his undergraduate studies at
the German School in Medellin, Colombia. He received his Doctor of Medicine in
1991 at the University of CES (formerly Instituto de Ciencias de la Salud -
CES) in Medellin, Colombia. In 2000, he completed his internship and residency
training in Internal Medicine followed by fellowships in Infectious Diseases,
Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine completed in 2004. Dr. Restrepo is
board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Internal
Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Pulmonary, and Critical Care Medicine. He also
completed in 2003 a Master of Science in Clinical Investigation at the UTHSCSA,
and in 2017 he received his PhD in Medicine - Cum Laude with Internal Mention
from the University of Valencia, Spain. He is a member of both pneumonia
guidelines sponsored by the American Thoracic Society (ATS) and Infectious Diseases
Society of America (IDSA). He is the current chair of the Chest Infections
Network of CHEST - American College of Chest Physicians. He serves as Associate
Editor for European Respiratory Journal and Respirology and is member of the
CHEST editorial board.
