Dr. Beata R. Godlewska has been a Hon consultant in psychiatry, Oxford Health NHS FT, and the senior clinical researcher at the Department of Psychiatry, University of Oxford, since 2007. Currently, she works with Prof. Philip Cowen's clinical psychopharmacology group. At the clinical level, she specializes in the treatment of mood disorders, major depressive disorder, and bipolar disorder, with a special focus on the early detection and mood-resistant forms of these conditions. Her research focuses on two main areas: the psychopharmacology of mood disorders–depression and bipolar disorder and the psychological mechanisms of antidepressant drug action.
Prof. Philip J. Cowen trained in medicine at University College Hospital, London, and in psychiatry at King’s College Hospital. He then worked in the MRC Unit of Clinical Pharmacology in Oxford under David Graham-Smith, where he studied the basic neuropharmacology of serotonin and its application to clinical psychopharmacology. Since 1983, he has been an MRC clinical scientist and honorary consultant psychiatrist in the Department of Psychiatry in Oxford. He was elected to a personal chair in psychopharmacology at the University of Oxford in 1997 and to a fellowship of the UK Academy of Medical Sciences in 2001. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the British Association of Psychopharmacology in 2014. His main interests are in the biochemistry and treatment of mood disorders, particularly the pharmacological management of resistant depression. He is a senior author of the Shorter Oxford Textbook of Psychiatry (most recent edition, 2017).
