Dr. Michel Abanto holds a BSc in Microbiology and Parasitology from the Universidad Nacional de Trujillo in Peru, an MSc in Molecular Biology from the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos in Peru, and a PhD in Computational and Systems Biology from the Oswaldo Cruz Institute in Brazil (2013). He then undertook a postdoctoral period in Microbial Genomics at the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (2013-2016), before taking up a position as a Research Associate in the Department of Biology and Biochemistry at the University of Bath in the UK. He currently holds an academic position at the Scientific and Technological Nucleus of Biological Resources (BIOREN) at the University of La Frontera in Chile. He is also the Head of the Genomics and Bioinformatics Unit at BIOREN. He has extensive experience in microbial genomics, metagenomics and bioinformatics. Dr. Abanto has worked with genomic data from important clinical and environmental bacterial species. He has also worked with functional genomics using RNA-seq in Atlantic salmon and human cancer. His research interests are microbial genomics, genome plasticity and applied bioinformatics. He has supervised undergraduate and graduate students for the past few years, as well as taught classes in microbial genomics and bioinformatics.
