Sarah B Bateni joined the Faculty of the UAB Department of
Surgery as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Surgical Oncology in
October 2022. She treats skin and soft tissue malignancies including melanoma,
Merkel cell carcinoma, cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma, advanced basal cell
carcinoma, extremity, retroperitoneal sarcoma, and small bowel
neuroendocrine tumors. She is a health services and outcomes researcher with a
focus on clinical and patient-reported outcomes in patients with advanced
cancer. She completed her medical degree and residency in general surgery at
the University of California, Davis. During this time, she completed a
fellowship in Quality, Safety, and Comparative Effectiveness Research and a
Master’s degree in clinical research in which she developed expertise in
population-based health services and comparative effectiveness research. She
subsequently completed her training in complex general surgical oncology at the
University of Toronto.
Dr. Sepideh Gholami MD, MAS, is a board-certified surgeon scientist with dual fellowship training in Complex General Surgical Oncology and Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery. Dr. Gholami serves as the Director of the Liver Multidisciplinary Clinic, Hepatic Artery Infusion Pump Program, and Translational Research in Surgical Oncology at Northwell Health. She has focused her efforts on building a multidisciplinary liver surgery program with liver-directed therapies/regional therapies, including a hepatic artery infusion pump program for patients with hepatobiliary and metastatic malignancies. Dr. Gholami’s mission is to diversify and improve the research and clinical trial portfolio at the Northwell Health Cancer Institute. She also has a joint appointment as an Adjunct Associate Professor at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. She serves as the co-chair of the colon subcommittee for the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG), a member of the NCI Colon Cancer Task Force, and American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Advanced Colon Guideline Expert Panel. She has numerous peer-reviewed publications and has been the recipient of several research grants and prestigious awards including the K12 Paul Calabrese Career Development Award and SWOG’s Young Investigator Award. She also holds awards from the Society of Surgical Oncology, Association of Women Surgeons, and Association of Academic Surgeons.
