Author Biographies

Dr. Jon Paul Faulkner is a Lecturer and Research Fellow working in the School of Architecture, Planning and Environmental Policy at University College Dublin. Dr. Faulkner is currently working on a project involving the co-designing of a regional strategy for the bioeconomy. He has a Rural Development-focused PhD in Planning and Environmental Policy; thesis entitled, ‘Rural restructuring and household vulnerability and resilience after a global economic shock’. He is an accomplished academic, with over twelve years experience in an applied research setting. Dr. Faulkner is an expert in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, graduating from TCD with an M.Sc. in Applied Social Research, and working on projects using both quantitative and qualitative research techniques in a workplace environment. Such quantitative research includes linear and logistic regression modelling and principle component analysis, as well as the application of statistical modelling to strategic mapping in GIS systems. Dr. Faulkner also has extensive experience in the application of qualitative methodologies including protocol analysis, in-depth qualitative interview techniques and cross-examination and evaluation of qualitative data analysis using NVivo. His research interests include regional and rural development, the bioeconomy, circularity and the green economy, noise pollution and health, housing density, vulnerability and resilience studies.
Prof. Enda Murphy is the Professor of Planning at the School of Architecture, Planning and Environmental Policy, where he has been a programme Director for the Masters in Regional and Urban Planning (MRUP) since 2019. He is also a UCD academic lead for the Sustainability and Climate Committee of Una Europa. Between 2015 and 2018, he held the position of Vice-Principal for Graduate Studies and Director of the Graduate School for the College of Social Sciences and Law (CoSSL). Beyond the University, he is an active Editorial Board Member of PLOS ONE, one of the world's leading science journals; he is also a current member of the UN SDSN SDG Academy High-Level Advisory Council (HLAC), whose mission focuses on the international development of Education for Sustainable Development. His research interests are broad in scope but centre on the areas of urban transportation and spatial planning, environmental noise, neoliberalism/neoliberalisation, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He has published widely in the international literature and is the author/co-author of more than 100 academic journal papers, book chapters, conference papers and reports and is co-author of three books. Enda has held visiting professor positions at the University of Economics, Ho Chi Minh City, University of Hartford, USA, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, Cape Town, CRENoS, University of Cagliari, and at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm. He is a former Fulbright Scholar.
Prof. Mark Scott is Professor of Planning and Dean of Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Planning & Environmental Policy at UCD. His research and teaching are focused on the environmental and sustainability dimensions of spatial planning theory and practice, specifically related to rural planning, land-use governance, climate action, green infrastructure and green space, health and the built environment, and natural and built heritage. He is a graduate of Queen’s University Belfast with a BSc in Environmental Planning, a Diploma in Town Planning and a PhD in Environmental Planning. He is a Corporate Member of the Irish Planning Institute and has served on the Institute’s Policy and Research Committee, Technical and Education Committee and Climate Action Committee. He has held numerous senior leadership roles at UCD, including his current role as Dean, head of school, and serving in the management group of the UCD Earth Institute. He regularly serves as an external examiner for undergraduate/graduate programmes and doctoral theses and he has held visiting appointments at the University of Pisa and the University of New South Wales. He currently contributes to a range of undergraduate and graduate programmes at UCD, including the BSc in City Planning & Environmental Policy, BSc in Landscape Architecture, Masters in Regional and Urban Planning, and MSc in Urban Design & Planning.
