Claus Jacob is a German scientist functioning as the Head of Bioorganic
Chemistry, at the School of Pharmacy, Saarland University. He received
his B.Sc.(Hons) 1st class in Chemistry in 1993 from the University of
Leicester, England, and his DPhil (Oxon) from the University of Oxford
in 1997 under the supervision of Allen Hill. His interests in
philosophy, history and psychology led to a Magister Artium (MA) degree
from the University of Hagen in 1998. He has been a postdoctoral
researcher at Harvard Medical School with Bert Vallee and a (senior)
lecturer at the University of Exeter before returning to the Saarland in
2005. Claus is an expert in a variety of topics ranging from organic
synthesis, bioorganic chemistry, catalytic sensor/effector agents,
intracellular diagnostics, nanotechnology, natural products, reactive
sulfur and selenium species, and redox regulation via the cellular
thiolstat to philosophical, social aspects and environmental aspects of
science. He has contributed more than 200 publications in the previously
mentioned fields. He is Editor-in-Chief of Sci and two other journals
in the fields of sustainable chemistry and nutrition, and is politically
active on an ecological democratic platform.
