Victor Midlej is a public health researcher at the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC), Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (FIOCRUZ). He has a degree in Biological Sciences from Universidade Santa Úrsula (2007) and a master's and doctorate degree in Morphological Sciences from the Institute of Biological Sciences/UFRJ, with a sandwich period at the University of California at San Diego (Department of Pathology, Division of Infectious Diseases). He completed a postdoctoral degree at the Cellular Ultrastructure Laboratory of the Carlos Chagas Filho Institute of Biophysics (UFRJ), with a focus on the differentiation process of the Giardia intestinalis parasite. He is currently head of the Structural Biology laboratory (LBE) and a collaborating professor of the Postgraduate Programs in Parasitic Biology and Cellular and Molecular Biology, both at IOC/FIOCRUZ. He has experience in the area of cellular biology, focusing on parasitology, working mainly on the following topics: trichomonas, giardia, host-parasite interaction, cell differentiation and ultrastructure. He has extensive experience in the area of electron microscopy and optical microscopy, and he is coordinator of the Rudolph Barth Electron Microscopy Platform at IOC and a member of the Brazilian Society of Microscopy and Microanalysis, coordinating courses, workshops and disciplines in the area of microscopy.
Wanderley De Souza graduated in Medicine from the Faculty of
Medicine of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in 1974, and since
the very onset of his medical education has dedicated himself to studying the cell
organization of pathogenic protozoa. In 1976, he completed a master’s degree at
the UFRJ Institute of Biophysics followed by a Ph.D. at the same institution.
As a researcher, Dr. Souza conducted studies at the National Polytechnic
Institute of Mexico (IPN), as well as at the University of Colorado and the
Washington University in St. Louis, both of them in the United States, in
addition to the University of Glasgow in Scotland. Among the several positions
that this renowned physician and academician currently holds, he has served as a
Full Professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro’s (UFRJ) Institute
of Biophysics Carlos Chagas Filho since 1993. The following year, he was
appointed as a Full Professor at the State University of the North Fluminense
Darcy Ribeiro’s (UENF) Biosciences and Biotechnology Center. He is a Member of
the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), the
National Academy of Medicine in Brazil, and the US National Academy of
Sciences. He holds experience in the field of parasitology, focusing
particularly on animal parasitic protozoology and working on the topics of
Trypanosoma cruzi, Tritrichomonas foetus, Toxoplasma gondii, T. cruzi and
Herpetomonas samuelpessoai.
