Author Biographies

Dr. Lucas Rizzo earned, from the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, a B.S. in Computational Mathematics (2010) and an M.S. in Computer Science (2013). He received his Ph.D. in Artificial Intelligence from the Technological University Dublin in 2020. From 2010 to 2011, he served as a Software Developer at SRK Consulting. From 2011 until now, he has been an Optimization Analyst at MiningMath. Since 2019, he has been a Dissertation Supervisor at the Dublin Business School. Now, he is also a Lecturer at the Technological University Dublin. His research interests include artificial intelligence, automated reasoning, computational argumentation theory, XAI, knowledge representation, and fuzzy reasoning. Dr. Rizzo’s research focus is on artificial intelligence, more specifically, automated reasoning and computational models of argument. Recently, they have been working in the field of XAI, trying to enhance computational argumentation and other knowledge-based systems through the use of machine learning algorithms and data-driven models.
Damiano Verda earned, from the University of Genova, a Master's degree (2010) and a Ph.D. (2014) in Computer Engineering. He also earned a second Master's degree in Management Engineering, from the Uninettuno Telematic University (2020). Since 2014, he has worked for Rulex, and became the Head of the Data Science Team in March 2019. His work in machine learning and robotic perception has resulted in more than twenty publications; he is a Senior Member of IEEE - Computational Intelligence Society. His research interests include explainable AI, rule-based models, and machine learning applications.
Serena Berretta earned a Master's degree in Statistics from the University of Padua. She began her career as a researcher at the Institute of Applied Mathematics and Information Technology (IMATI) of the National Research Council (CNR), focusing on applied statistics in geological sciences. Serena then pursued a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics through a collaboration between the University of Genoa and CNR-IMATI. Since 2022, she has been working as a Data Scientist at Rulex. Her research interests include machine learning, optimization techniques, data quality, and rule-based models.
Dr Luca Longo is an Italian computer scientist specializing in artificial intelligence, deep learning, and argumentation theory with research in human performance modelling. Besides having obtained a Ph.D. at the University of Dublin, Trinity College (TCD), in Artificial Intelligence, he has completed a B.Sc. (Honours) and an M.Sc. in Computer Science at the University of Insubria (Varese, Italy), a Postgraduate Diploma in Statistics and an M.Sc. in Health Informatics at TCD,  a Postgraduate Diploma in Learning and Teaching at the Technological University Dublin, and an M.Sc. in Applied e-Learning. He founded the World Conference on Explainable Artificial Intelligence, and besides performing research in the field, he conducts fundamental research in computational models of cognitive load. He is a public speaker disseminating technical knowledge to the broader public and contributing to the non-profit organization TED (conference) “ideas worth spreading”. Luca is the recipient of the 2023 “AI Person of the Year” award and also the 2016 and 2021 winner of the Teaching Hero Award in Ireland.
