Author Biographies

Álvaro Gómez-Rodríguez received his MSc in Aeronautical Engineering from the Faculty of Aeronautical and Space Engineering (Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Aeronáutica y del Espacio, ETSIAE) of Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) in 2018 and is now pursuing a PhD in Aerospace Engineering at this same University. He was granted two research collaboration scholarships during his studies at the UPM and obtained the International Federation of Airworthiness (IFA) Scholarship in 2018, which led him to run the Airworthiness MSc course at Cranfield University. He is working as a Teaching Assistant in the Department of Aircraft and Spacecraft of the UPM since 2019. In 2023, he conducted a predoctoral research stay at the Safety & Accident Investigation Centre in Cranfield University. His research topics mainly include the conceptual design of manned and unmanned aircraft, the initial airworthiness and certification of both types of air vehicles and the investigation of Artificial Intelligence approaches in aircraft design.
Mr. Cengiz Turkoglu earned a BEng (Hons) Degree in Aircraft Engineering from Kingston University, an MSc in Air Transport Management from City University London and is currently conducting his PhD research at Cranfield University. He has been the Senior Lecturer and Course Director of the MSc Airworthiness at Cranfield University, also holding the ‘Quality Manager’ position at the University’s National Flying Laboratory Centre for SPO Authorisation and CAMO Approval. He is currently the Safety Manager (AOC) and Safety & Acting Compliance Manager (CAMO) at Norse Atlantic UK. He has been a member of the UK Flight Safety Committee since 2010 and joined the ‘Executive Board’ as the Vice Chairman in 2015. He has also been chairing the Technical Committee of the International Federation of Airworthiness since 2011 and became the VP Technical in 2017. He has been a panellist in more than 30 international conferences in the field of aviation safety and has authored several scientific publications. He holds aircraft maintenance and airman licences and has extensive experience in positions of great responsibility in industry within the fields of aviation safety and maintenance.
Cristina Cuerno-Rejado is a PhD Aeronautical Engineer and Full Professor of Aerospace Engineering in the Department of Aircraft and Spacecraft of the Faculty of Aeronautical and Space Engineering (Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Aeronáutica y del Espacio) of Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM). During the period 2020–2024, she was the Director of this faculty. She obtained a prize for her PhD thesis and was granted a medal by the Spanish Ministry of Defense. Since 2010, she has made these tasks compatible with being a member of the Board of the Spanish Civil Aviation Air Accidents and Incidents Investigation Commission. In addition, she is a member of the Executive Committee of the RPAS Advisory Commission of the Spanish Civil Aviation Authority. Her main lines of research and teaching activity are focused on the conceptual design of both conventional and unconventional commercial transport aircraft and unmanned aircraft, airworthiness certification and air accidents investigation. She has taken part in more than 50 projects and research contracts, and she has published, among articles, lectures at conferences, and books, more than one hundred scientific documents.
