Khyne U Mar is a veterinarian and conservation biologist. She received her veterinary degree from the Institute of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science, Yangon, Myanmar, in 1973, and MPhil (Veterinary Surgery) at the same institute in 1993. She received an FRVCS (Fellow of the Royal Veterinary College of Sweden) from the Swedish University of Agriculture Sciences, Uppsala, Sweden, in 1991. She was a Senior Lecturer at the Veterinary Faculty in Myanmar between 1974 and 1994. She joined the Myanmar Timber Enterprise, under the charge of the Ministry of Forestry, as Head of the Veterinary Research Division to set up a research project on logging the elephants in Myanmar between 1994 and 1999. She completed her MSc (Wild Animal Health) at the Royal Veterinary College, London, in 2001, and her PhD (Conservation Biology) at University College London (UK) in 2007. She joined the Department of Animal Plant Sciences, University of Sheffield, UK, as a research fellow to manage the Myanmar Elephant Research Project between 2008 and 2018 as a research coordinator. Her work on the captive management of Asian elephants has resulted in 50+ publications. She is a member of the Asian Elephant Specialist Group (AESG) of the International Union on Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Her research interests include clinical veterinary medicine, neonatal care of elephants, and behavior training for elephants.
