Prof. Jagmeet S. Kanwal, PhD, directs the Neurophysiology and Behavior Laboratory in the Department of Neurology at the Georgetown University Medical Center (GUMC). Dr. Kanwal served as Vice Chair of the Department of Physiology and Biophysics, and holds secondary appointments in Neuroscience and Psychology departments. He was a founding member of the Georgetown Institute for Cognitive and Computational Sciences, and is a Principal Member of the GUMC Teaching Academy. He is also an External Professor at the Krasnow Institute for Advanced Study at George Mason University, Fairfax, VA. As a von Humboldt scholar, Dr. Kanwal worked at the University of Munich (1996). Dr. Kanwal received a PhD in Physiology and Zoology in 1986 from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA, and conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Colorado Medical Center in Denver, CO, and as a Research Assistant Professor at Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. Kanwal's laboratory has conducted research on the brain and behavior of bats, human subjects, nonhuman primates and zebrafish. His primary interest is in using neuroethological approaches to understand the organization of neural circuits for auditory communication, learning, attention and decision making. Dr. Kanwal has published over 150 conference papers and journal articles and is a co-editor/author of two books. He has organized local and international conferences, and served on the editorial board of several reputable journals.
