Author Biographies

Jazma Sutton is an Assistant Professor of African American History in the Department of History at Miami University in Ohio. She received her BA in History and Africana Studies from Southern Illinois University Carbondale, and her Master's and Ph.D. in History from Indiana University, Bloomington. Her research focuses on the histories of slavery and freedom in the U.S., with a particular interest in African American women’s history and the Midwest. She is currently working on a book project that chronicles the lived experiences of Black women—free, enslaved, and self-liberated—who chose to leave the South and pursue freedom in the early Black settlements of Indiana.
