Author Biographies

Dr. Alfio Torrisi is a Researcher and Lecturer at Kore University of Enna, where he teaches Applied Physics in the Department of Medicine and Surgery. He obtained his Ph.D. in Optoelectronics from the Military University of Technology in Warsaw, Poland, specializing in the development of microscopy prototypes based on compact gaseous sources operating in short wavelength ranges. His research spans several European institutions and focuses on materials science, applied physics in biomedicine, environmental analysis, and cultural heritage. Dr. Torrisi is also involved in plasma monitoring, utilizing silicon carbide (SiC) detectors to study interactions between laser and ion beams and matter. He has established numerous international collaborations and contributed to a variety of multidisciplinary projects. He has been invited to give several lectures and is the author of over 165 publications in international scientific journals. His current H-index, according to Scopus, is 18, with over 1200 citations.
Dr. Mariapompea Cutroneo is a Researcher at the University of Messina, Italy, where she teaches Physics in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Earth Sciences (MIFT). She received her Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Messina, with a thesis entitled Ion Acceleration, Diagnostics, and Laser-Plasma Applications. She was a leading researcher at the Tandetron Laboratory of the Nuclear Physics Institute (NPI) in the Czech Republic, where she focused on the modification and characterization of materials using ion microbeams and Ion Beam Analyses.
Lorenzo Torrisi is a Full Professor of Experimental Physics at the University of Messina. He currently teaches Interactions of Radiation with Matter, Plasmas, and Diagnostic Techniques as part of the master’s degree program in Physics. He received his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Messina, Italy, in 1988. He became an Associate Professor in 1992. He is an expert in surface analysis, laser-generated plasma, and research on innovative materials. He also coordinates national and international scientific collaborations.
Dr. Salvatore Lavalle is a medical doctor and Researcher/Lecturer of Radiology at the Department of Medicine and Surgery at Kore University of Enna. He pursued his medical education at the University of Messina, Italy, and completed a 6-month internship at the Endocrinology and Diabetes Department of the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, UK, under Prof. Colin Dayan. He also underwent a 4-month traineeship at the Cardiology Department of The North Lisbon University Hospital Center in Portugal. Dr. Lavalle spent 5 years at the Experimental Radiology Unit of the IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, Italy, where he obtained his specialization and worked until October 2022. His research focuses on imaging techniques related to the musculoskeletal system, particularly sarcopenia, as well as head and neck and prostate cancer. He has also conducted research in oncology and otolaryngology. Recently, his work has concentrated on artificial intelligence and radiomics. He is affiliated with the Italian Society of Medical Radiology (SIRM) and the European Society of Radiology (ESR).
Dr. Alessia Forzina is currently employed at the IBSA Group, an international pharmaceutical company based in Lugano. Her extensive educational background and professional experience highlight her significant contributions to medical research and clinical studies. Dr. Forzina began her academic journey in Australia, where she earned her Ph.D. in Pharmacology from Queensland University in Brisbane. Her doctoral research focused on the effects of bilirubin in myocardial infarction, underscoring her dedication to understanding complex medical conditions and advancing pharmacological science. In 2021, Dr. Forzina further expanded her expertise by obtaining a master's degree in Data Management in Clinical Studies from Bicocca University in Milan. This additional qualification emphasizes her commitment to integrating data management with clinical research, ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of clinical trials. Since joining the IBSA Group in 2018, Dr. Forzina has played a crucial role in the medical management team. She oversees clinical studies, provides medical insights, and ensures that the company's research adheres to the highest standards of scientific rigor and ethical integrity. Her expertise is frequently showcased as a speaker at international congresses, where she shares her knowledge and findings with the global medical community.
Francesco Pegreffi obtained his medical degree from the University of Bologna in Italy and specialized in orthopedic surgery at the Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute. He currently holds the academic position of Associate Professor at the Kore University of Enna, a prestigious institution in Sicily. In this capacity, he conducts extensive research on the biomechanics of rehabilitation and the functional recovery of patients with osteoarthritis, focusing on both conservative and surgical treatments. Prof. Pegreffi has established several international collaborations, significantly contributing to numerous multidisciplinary projects. His research initiatives often involve partnerships with leading institutions worldwide, facilitating innovative practices in orthopedic surgery and rehabilitation. In addition to his academic responsibilities, Prof. Pegreffi serves as the Director of the Unit of Recovery and Functional Rehabilitation at Policlinico Umberto I in Enna, Sicily. In this role, he oversees clinical programs aimed at enhancing patient outcomes through state-of-the-art rehabilitation techniques and translating research findings into practical applications that benefit patient care.
