Author Biographies

Steve den Hollander received his Bachelor's degree in Sports Science (2013) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Then, he graduated from the University of Cape Town and earned a B.Sc. (Honours) in Exercise Science (2015) and a Ph.D. in Exercise Science (2020). After graduation, he continued his engagement with the University of Cape Town as a Postdoctoral Fellow and now, as an Honourary Research Affiliate. He is also the National Data and Sport Scientist at UXI Sport and a Sport Science consultant at FIFPRO.
Gino Kerkhoffs is the Chair of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Amsterdam University Medical Centers, the Vice Chair of the Division of Surgery at Amsterdam University Medical Centers, the Chair of the Academic Center of Evidence-based Sports Medicine (ACES) at the University of Amsterdam, and the Co-Chair of Amsterdam International Olympic Committee Research Center. He is also the Professor of Orthopaedics at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Amsterdam. He graduated from the University of Amsterdam and received his Ph.D. in 2005. Before his current role, he was an Orthopedic Surgeon at the Department of Orthopedic and Trauma Surgery, Kantonsspital Sankt Gallen, Switzerland (2006–2007). His research focus is mainly on the treatment of osteochondral defects (e.g., based on waterjet techniques), optimization of the diagnosis and treatment of ankle, knee, and sports injuries, teaching methods for arthroscopy techniques, and evidence-based medicine.
Vincent Gouttebarge is a former professional footballer who played 14 seasons in France and The Netherlands (232 games). He is an Extraordinary Professor at the Section of Sports Medicine of the University of Pretoria and a Researcher at the Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine Department of the Amsterdam University Medical Center. He is also Chief Medical Officer at FIFPRO (Football Players Worldwide). He earned his Ph.D. at the University of Amsterdam in 2008. His work focuses on a wide range of sports medicine domains relevant to professional sports (with an emphasis on football). He is Chair of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Mental Health Working Group, Co-Director of the IOC Programs on Mental Health in Elite Sport, a member of the Heading Expert Group of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), a member of the Medical Committee of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), a member of the Medical Committee of the Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF), a member of the Medical Expert Group of the French Professional Football League (LFP), a member of the Concussion in Para Sport (CIPS) group, a member of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Mental Health Working Group, and a member of the South African Sports Medicine Association (SASMA). Professor Doctor Gouttebarge is also a member of the Editorial Board of the South African Journal of Sports Medicine.
